Description
The Horne Smelter, operated by Glencore, is Canada's only operating copper smelter located in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. It has been in operation since 1927 and is one of the world's largest processors of used electronics. The facility produces 99.1% pure copper anodes by processing approximately 740,000 metric tonnes of copper concentrate and other copper- and precious-metal-containing materials annually, including recycled electronics. The smelter employs a complex process involving a Noranda reactor, converters, and various refining stages to transform raw materials into high-purity copper anodes. These anodes are then transported to the CCR Refinery in Montreal-East for final processing into 99.99% pure copper cathodes. The Horne Smelter also produces sulfuric acid as a by-product, generating over 640,000 metric tons annually. In recent years, the facility has invested significantly in modernization efforts to reduce arsenic emissions and meet provincial environmental standards.
