Description
Electra Battery Materials Corporation is developing a future cobalt sulfate refinery project in Bécancour, Quebec, as part of its strategy to expand its battery materials production capacity in North America. This facility is strategically located in the Bécancour Industrial Park, which is gaining a reputation as a "battery valley" due to the presence of other key players in the battery supply chain, including Vale's nickel sulfate plant and facilities being built by GM, POSCO, and Ford. The Bécancour project is planned to be developed in phases, with Phase I targeting a production capacity of up to 2,000 tonnes per annum of cobalt contained in sulfate, and Phase II aiming for 5,000 to 10,000 tonnes per annum. The facility will benefit from 100% hydroelectric electricity supply and is positioned to integrate directly with POSCO's nearby operations, potentially offering cost savings. Electra is working with government support and Investment Quebec to build this refinery capacity, which will complement its Ontario site and strengthen the company's position in the North American battery materials supply chain.
