BASF Canada Inc.

Description

BASF is a major global chemical company with significant involvement in the lithium-ion battery industry in Canada. In 2022, BASF announced plans to establish a cathode active materials (CAM) and battery recycling facility in Bécancour, Quebec, as part of its strategy to support North America's transition to electric mobility. The company aimed to create a closed-loop battery materials ecosystem, including CAM production, precursor supply, metal refining, and recycling capabilities. However, as of early 2024, BASF appears to have put these plans on hold, stating they are still evaluating the best location for a CAM and battery recycling hub in North America. Despite this uncertainty, BASF remains active in the Canadian battery materials sector through other initiatives. For instance, they have entered into a joint development agreement with Nano One, a Canadian clean technology company, to co-develop a process for commercial production of next-generation CAM using Nano One's patented technologies. BASF continues to be a leading global supplier of advanced CAM for the lithium-ion battery market, providing materials to major cell producers and automotive OEMs, and is actively involved in various aspects of the battery supply chain, including sourcing, metals management, and recycling solutions.
