Description
Umicore's Loyalist Township project is a significant investment in Canada's electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. The company is building a first-of-its-kind battery materials production plant in Loyalist Township, Ontario, which will combine large-scale cathode active materials (CAM) and precursor cathode active materials (pCAM) production at a single site. The facility, located in the Taylor Kidd Industrial Park, will occupy approximately 145 hectares. The project's first stage involves a $2.1 billion investment, with $1.8 billion in capital expenditures, to create an initial production capacity of 35 GWh annually, enough to support the production of over 800,000 EVs per year at full capacity. The Canadian and Ontario governments are supporting the project with investments of up to $551.3 million and $424.6 million, respectively. The plant aims to be nearly carbon neutral from the start, using only renewable energy. It's expected to create 600 new direct jobs in its first stage, plus 700 co-op positions for students, and approximately 1,000 jobs during construction. However, recent reports indicate that the project has been temporarily put on hold due to decreased demand for EV batteries, though local officials remain confident it will proceed in some form.
